Troubleshooting the Editor

Note: The maximum file size per file upload is one gigabyte.  If your video is already hosted on YouTube, Vimeo, or another video sharing website, you can get the embed code from those services and use the HTML plugin.  Standard Business Edition networks are limited to 100 minutes of free video encoding per month, with optional 1,000 minute add-ons available.  Contact your sales representative for more details.

The process to embed videos is identical to the process to embed an image into a page.  To embed a video into a page, follow these steps.

  1. While in edit mode, click on the "Images and Files" tab on the right hand side.  If you don't see this tool bar on the right side, then you aren't editing the page.

  2. Click the "Upload Files" link:

  3. Choose the video file from your computer you want to upload and click Open to upload the file.

    Note:
A video file is a single file that can be played in Quicktime, Windows Media Player, or some kind video player.  While you can upload any kind of file to your workspace, only video files can be embedded on a page as a video.

  4. After uploading, the video will appear in the images and files list.  To insert the video into the page, just click on the video file.

  5. When you click on a video file, the file is inserted as an embeddable video.  To see the video in action, save the page.

When you first save the page, the video will be represented by an image, like the one below (before).  The reason for this waiting period is that the video must be converted into a streaming format and that may take some time.  The longer a video is, the longer it will take to convert. To check the status of a video, just check the page in view mode.  When the video is ready, the triangle will become a button that you can click and the video will play inside the browser.

Length Limits

Only the first 10 minutes of a video will be available to stream by default.  If you are a network administrator and the videos on your network need more time available, please contact support by clicking the "Contact an agent" button in the upper right corner of this page and let us know.

Processing Time

The exact amount of time it takes to encode does vary based on the codec used, but the amount of time should never exceed more than three times the length of the video.  For example, if a video is 7 minutes, it should be available in under 20 minutes.  If you run into problems with an uploaded video, please contact support immediately with the name of the video you uploaded.  Do not delete the video from your workspace.

Select Video Poster

The frame that is shown as a place holder for where the video will play on the page is the video poster.  By default, the image used for this is just a random still, but you can edit this plugin to place whatever image you want.  Here's how:

  1. First, upload the image that you want to use.  There is nothing in PBworks which can do this for you, but most video editing software will easily let you pick out one frame of the video and export it to a JPEG or PNG file.  The image file does not even need to be from the video, it can be any image file that will show on a web page.
  2. In edit mode on the page, right click the embedded video, and choose "Edit Plugin".

  3. Finally, choose the image file you wish to use, and click Next, and then Insert Plugin.

Supported Video Types

The editor will only embed a video if the file has one of these extensions:

Extension
Most commonly used file type*
mov Quicktime movie files
mpg MPEG-1, MPEG-2 movie files
mp4 MPEG-4 movie files
3gp Mobile device movie files
m4v Apple video format (may contain additional DRM protection that make encoding not possible)
wmv Windows Media Video file
asf Advanced Streaming Format (used by Windows and Windows Media Player mostly)
avi Audio-video interleave.  AVI files may contain some unsupported codecs, and may not be appropriate for use in our editor (if the file is over 1 GB).  If possible, use an external application to convert the file into a more compressed format, like MPEG-4 or a Quicktime movie file.
ogv Theora video files
webm Format for use with HTML5 web browsers

Note: Changing a file's extension will not change the actual file.  For example, if a file is not in a supported format, changing the file extension will not convert the file to another format.  Additionally, a file extension does not guarantee compatibility with our encoding software.  For a complete list of encoding formats, click the link below.

The video encoding service PBworks uses is Zencoder, and they support the most widely used video codecs and types.  For a complete list of supported video types, click here:
